Big News at RDM!

Kansas City, Mo. (May 7, 2020) - Richard D. McDermott, AIA NCARB, founder and owner of RDM Architecture, a boutique design firm specializing in high-end residential and light commercial projects, has transferred ownership to two long-time employees. Matt Lero and Mike Schumacher became principals and owners of the firm earlier this year....

Master Suite in Manhattan Kansas

We talk a lot about phasing of projects and how it can help to make a large project more feasible for a lot of reasons. Breaking it into phases and spacing those out spreads out the financial load but it also lets you stay in your house rather than moving out during the project. The key to doing that sucessfully starts with a good plan. In this case, back in 2010/2011 we designed a total remodel of the lower level, remodel...

Cobblepot Cottages

We tell people all the time that we work on all scales of project and we do! Right now we've got our beautiful Table Rock Lake residence under construction with a footprint of about 3000 sqft and what we've been calling the Cobblepot Cottages at around 400 sqft each. Also located on a lake and focused on views, the Cottages are hidden in the woods overlooking Lake of the Ozarks on the Gravois Mills arm. The steepness of the site and...

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

For a number of homeowners, there comes a point where they are faced with an important decision: to sell their current home and move, or renovate their existing space to fit their needs. The decision isn’t always in easy one; it entails looking at the market to see what’s available, examining the potential for a “forever” home, and seeing if a new neighborhood rivals an existing one. The Doolittles are a perfect example of this dilemma. This local couple bought their...

Prairie Modern from the Sky

We love this house and seeing it from the above was fantastic. Andrew Patch from Heartland Drone Company came out and shot it and then put this video together for us. Take a look and let us know what you think....

Architecturally Attached Garage Progress

This project centered around the idea of creating a garage that would accommodate a handicap accessible van as well as create an entrance to the home from the drive. We were challenged by the requirement to keep the garage architecturally attached to the home. Eventually we landed on the idea that the home and garage should be connected via a large horizontal plane or pergola. More pictures to follow. The project is now complete and we will post again with an...

Lakehouse Master Bath

The weather outside might be edging toward frightful but we've gotten the photos back on this Lakehouse Master Bathroom and we love the way it turned out. This was a remodel and addition which updated the master bedroom and reworked and expanded the master bath and closet to make it much more usable and a place where you might want to live full time. Blues and grays make this a very calming space perfect for a weekend (or more!) at the lake. We...

RDM Architecture in Spaces

We love this house and we're happy to see it highlighted in one of our favorite local architecture magazines and on the cover no less! There wasn't much room in the article to mention the people that helped make it as cool as we think it is and while we hope that it will be featured in future articles that might mention those involved in making a design like this a reality we want to highlight those people whenever we can. The...
