Thinking of Remodeling?

Think JOY in Addition to Cost / Value   A few before/after RDM remodel pictures: Olsen Basement, Sexton Stair/Living Room. October 2011Rick McDermott Remodeling magazine has released their 2010-2011 analysis of estimated costs recouped for a variety of home projects - everything from a family room addition to a new master suite. It's an interesting look at both mid-range and upscale projects, and compares our region (West North Central) to the national average. (You can take a look here.) What the...

2019 Residence

Windows are in and shingles are on. It is hard to see but the panel trim is in as well and looks great. A view of the inside of the 2nd floor bedroom. The bump-out is sized for a king-size bed and the windows are located high enough to allow for a headboard and privacy from the street. This is the addition to the back of the house. Much smaller, it houses the laundry and an enlarged closet....

6135 Studio

This project in theBrookside area involved replacing a worn out detached 2 car garage with a new 2 car garage along side an art studio. The parameters of the design for the studio/garage were the clients request to have everything on one level, the context of the neighborhood and the confines of the rear yard of the lot. The new driveway and sidewalk help define the planting bed that will bring some ‘green’ back into the back yard.  ...

1232 Residence

A quick update on this project, the floor slab is in and the brick corners are in and look great. Demolition is starting on the house, removing the bumpout at the kitchen to put in the new structural members that will span that new much larger opening. The mason, Rick Roos and Greg from Hurst Construction discuss the new planters that will be added at the screen porch and adjacent to the garage. We just got a project album...

Custom Stair Install 3

It's done! Ok, its not quite done but by the time most of you see this it will be. This stair has turned out better then we could have imagined and the client is ecstatic about the change to the space that happened just by changing the stair. Hurst construction has done another amazing project for us, the fit and finish to this stair is amazing especially considering the modifications that had to be made to the stair as it...

About Your House with Bob Yapp – Video

In going through photos and files during the building of the new website we came across a VHS tape of an episode of About Your House With Bob Yapp that featured the Ellis residence that RDM completed back in the late 90's. Filmed over the course of 2 days the video, which featured historically sensitive renovations, shows some great shots of the house and a short interview with Rick. We had the video transferred to a dvd not long ago...

RDM takes home another award!

Last week while Rick was away KC Magazine held their annual Design Excellence Awards. Mike and Matthew showed up at the new J.E. Dunn headquarters downtown to represent RDM Architecture and hopefully pick up an award. We submitted the Sun Room Addition (http://www.rdmarchitecture.com/blog-whats-new/dogs-and-architecture.html) and took home an award for Architecture_Exterior! Former RDM employee Jerad Foster and his crew, who built the entertainment unit pictured above for the project, picked up an award for that as well making the project...

Out to Bid!

We've wrapped up construction documents on this light-filled, two-story kitchen addition. Located on large lot in Prairie Village, KS the house had a small kitchen that was badly in need of an update. We extended the upper floor to create an open two-story space above the new kitchen and opened up the two adjacent rooms with 2 large new windows and a 12' sliding patio door. A dark kitchen tucked into the interior of the house will be transformed into...

Handrail Fitting

Last-Minute Fitting We just posted some images of this project, but we were out there for the test fitting and adjustment of the guard rail and hand rail and we're excited about how great it looks. It will be powder-coated to match the brackets so any adjustments, drilling or welding have to be done now. It is like a dress fitting for a building the week before the big event. That's Brian of Hurst Construction up there adjusting the upper end of the...
