A Big Loss at RDM

A sad day on Tuesday (8.12.14) here at RDM due to the passing of a valuable team member and friend, Cooper McDermott. The Coop dog was born December of 2004 and joined us in the office just 8 weeks later. He brought joy, balance and inspiration along with an unconditional loyalty and love to the studio. We will miss our pal and his great spirit. Celebrate Life! ...

5002 Residence Update

If you've driven down Wornall into the plaza you might have seen this. The screen wall from the exterior is pretty much done and looks great. A closer view. This was the first time we've worked with this material, DassoXTR, and our first impressions are good. It is a great alternative to Ipe, though it is a little more expensive, it is actually more dense and a lot straighter. The downside is that is only comes in 6'...

5209 Residence

Back in November we did a mini design build project for this client. (http://www.rdmarchitecture.com/blog-whats-new/custom-gate.html) Since then we have added a fence to the gate since the dogs discovered they could break through the invisible fence through the plantings on either side. We carried the feel of the gate though to an undulating modular fence. The fence was a secondary project. The primary project was the complete reworking of the front yard and the pedestrian and vehicular access to the house. The...

5235 Residence 2

Underway! Demolition shots are fun so here are a couple more. Below is the temporary bracing to put an upset beam since that was a structural wall. The visible beams in the living rooms aren't structural. New upset LVL and new hangers are installed. We'd actually planned on having the beam below the ceiling level as you can see in the renderings here but we like the ceiling plane going through into the kitchen. Electrical is in! New floor is toothed in. (We've been a...

5002 Residence

After taking a short rest from the completion of a new curved stair case in the living room the clients have decided to take on a new project - the exterior deck. Demolition found some unwelcome though not entirely unexpected things. The existing structure had some significant rot throughout which we suspected might be the case. We didn't realize that the existing deck wasn't really anchored to the ground and the structural support were mostly just sitting on dirt. Not an...

5235 Residence

You've already seen a couple of these images but here is a bit more info about that project. Below are some photots of the existing kitchen. It is a little dated and doesn't quite fit the way the homeowners cook and was too closed off from the rest of the house. Our design opened up the kitchen into the living room and also expanded it into the weird small pantry and laundry room that the previous owners had created. Plenty of...

Coming Soon!

A big sneak preview of things that are coming soon! Three really different projects at three different scales which is what we love about what we do! The first is a garage/ mudroom/ shop addition that is just starting construction. We are adding to an existing garage to create two car tandom garage plus storage and shop space. An overhanging roof expands and shelters the existing outdoor space. Next is a another fantastic kitchen! Demolition is well under way and we should...
