Phosphor Studio

When Phosphor Studio (the guys responsible for our new website and frequent tech support ninjas) approached us to design a new office and production space for them in an existing downtown KC building we were obviously excited. When he said he wanted to incorporate a green roof and enviromentally responsible materials throughout it seemed like a perfect fit. The building had an existing mezzanine that would have been perfect for offices but it had no natural light and the...

1232 Residence Update 7

A site visit and some new pictures to share! The slate roof installers are organized and starting work. Using a list developed from the computer program they gather the correct sizes and colors and using the motorized trolley, stage them on the roof. It is slow going on the first couple courses because of the exposed rafter tails. To avoid punching through the tongue and groove decking, slots are cut in the tiles and copper straps are used to reach...

Custom Gate

RDM Architecture jumped into the design-build side of things with this gate we designed for a previous client who's dogs discovered a weak spot in the "invisible fence". At this particular spot they were able to build up some speed and get through and out of range. To resolve this we just needed a gate as the surrounding plantings are dense/thorny enough to disuade the dogs from going around.   The gate structure and pickets are cedar and the posts...

Belvedere Update 14

Rick and Mike had a meeting out at the Belvedere site and had some time to take a few progress pictures. First off we've got the first view you see coming onto the site. Some excavation of the extra gravel in front of the garage has been removed to get the grade a little closer to where it will end up. You can see through the trees that the same has happened at the lower garage in addition to the...

Olsen Residence_Phase 2

With the completion of the basement renovation (see it here or here) we are moving into the next phase of the larger project.  Since the homeowners will be living in the house throughout the project they needed a place to cook and eat while the kitchen is demolished and rebuilt.  These are the renderings prepared during the design process. The left image is from the same point as the left "before" image above. As you can see we've opened...

1232 Residence Update 6

I stopped by this morning to clarify a couple details with the contractor and to see what's going on. Before we get to the progress, I wanted to share this photo that we didn't get posted before Halloween. The neighbor decided that the porta-potty needed a little holiday spirit. Fantastic. Yesterday morning the slate arrived for the new roof. The company they worked with used a computer program to match the existing slate color and pattern. They submitted a...

Belvedere Update 13

A couple photos of the stone going up. This is a big step in the exterior of the project. The site work and retaining walls use the thin stone and all the building stone is full depth stone. This allowed use to keep the wall thickness at something more reasonable since a lot of the retaining walls, like the one pictured below, are quite high and have a lot of reinforcing.  What is difficult to see in this photo and...

1232 Residence Update 5

Things are moving along still over at 1232. Interior demolition is pretty much complete and one of the upset LVLs are in. In the photo to the right you can see everything has been removed except the walls around the stairs to the basment. The sloped portion will be concealed in a built-in cabinet/ fold-down desk. The walls visible to the right of the right image are temporary and existing walls that will remain in place until the second upset...

1232 Residence Update 4

Just a quick update today, if you want to see more you can check out the Facebook Gallery here.  Below is a before and after shot of the East side of the addition. You can see the metal mesh is in and the metal corners at the pilaster. All the doors and windows are in and trimmed out on the exterior. As of yesterday it seems like fall has started so we are now in a race with the elements...
