5002 Residence

After taking a short rest from the completion of a new curved stair case in the living room the clients have decided to take on a new project - the exterior deck. Demolition found some unwelcome though not entirely unexpected things. The existing structure had some significant rot throughout which we suspected might be the case. We didn't realize that the existing deck wasn't really anchored to the ground and the structural support were mostly just sitting on dirt. Not an...

5235 Residence

You've already seen a couple of these images but here is a bit more info about that project. Below are some photots of the existing kitchen. It is a little dated and doesn't quite fit the way the homeowners cook and was too closed off from the rest of the house. Our design opened up the kitchen into the living room and also expanded it into the weird small pantry and laundry room that the previous owners had created. Plenty of...

Coming Soon!

A big sneak preview of things that are coming soon! Three really different projects at three different scales which is what we love about what we do! The first is a garage/ mudroom/ shop addition that is just starting construction. We are adding to an existing garage to create two car tandom garage plus storage and shop space. An overhanging roof expands and shelters the existing outdoor space. Next is a another fantastic kitchen! Demolition is well under way and we should...

Damn Ice Dams.

Photo: coolflatroof.com While icicles hanging off of roofs or gutters might look beautiful, they are actually a sign of problems. Icicles typically mean an ice dam is nearby which spells trouble for homeowners. What are ice dams? Ice dams form when melting snow on a roof refreezes at the edge of the roof. The snow melts because of heat rising through the house, warming the roof to a temperature above 32° F. The melted snow then runs down the roof and re-freezes as...

C2 Residence Update 4

We're done! Yet another sucessful RDM Architecture and Hurst Construction Project!  Not a whole lot more to say, especially if you've been following along with the progress. Below is the storage/ entertainment side of things. It is difficult to see in either photo be there is a perforated metal pane in the last of the short cabinets that is painted to match the cabinets and hides the sub ( we don't like speaker fabric in this case ). ...

C2 Residence Update 3

We went by this project today to see where things were (just about done actually) and are very very happy with the way it looks. It is hard to believe this is the same space. The frameless openings into the sunroom look great and even though you can't tell there is glass in there. We had planned on the same glass used for the upper cabinets but in the end I think this works better and makes the kitchen feel even...

Ward and Ward

We haven't really posted anything from this project during the process but you may have noticed the work going on if you spend much time around the Brookside area. I (Matt) actually worked for Ward & Ward off and on for quite some time so when they decided to move it was a perfect fit for RDM to be involved in the project. The building is a little brick mid-century just around the corner from their previous location. The idea...

1232 Residence – Photos

Back in September this kitchen was featured in an article in Kansas City Homes & Gardens and while we were out there talking with the writer and catching up with the clients we had the photographer, Matt Kocourek,  shoot a couple more pictures for us to round out the documentation of the project. We think it is some good architecture and the clients really love the new spaces, so take a look.  Thanks to everyone involved....
