Phosphor Studio

When Phosphor Studio (the guys responsible for our new website and frequent tech support ninjas) approached us to design a new office and production space for them in an existing downtown KC building we were obviously excited. When he said he wanted to incorporate a green roof and enviromentally responsible materials throughout it seemed like a perfect fit.

The building had an existing mezzanine that would have been perfect for offices but it had no natural light and the existing bar joists were just above our heads. The resolve this, we inserted three 18" deep beams that span from the existing walls and are set at the top of the existing joists. All of the joists between were removed giving us a wide open ceiling that is now more than 18" higher and uninterupted. Windows were cut through the existing walls to let light into the offices and to improve the look of the exterior.

In addition to the offices a stair was added to allow access to a private roof deck that has a spectacular view of the urban garden across the street and the newly completed performing arts center. Below you can see the construction of the penthouse is underway and the new stairs have been inserted. Wherever possible we wanted to show the new structural elements. Walls were placed in plane with the flanges of the new beams so that as you make your way to the penthouse you can really see the contrast between the new and existing.

We're excited about this project and we'll have updates as often as we can but until then Phosphor Studio has set up a few webcams out at the site which makes it easy to follow along with the progress. Go take a look here: http://phosphorstudio.com/

We'll also add some existing and current photos to our Facebook page so check back often.

Focus on Kitchens

Form. Function. Fun.

Because so much of the value of home is centered around the kitchen, it requires special attention. Kitchens can and should deliver both form (beauty) and function (the needs of each client). Oh, and did we say fun?
